Mitsubishi Electric Shanghai Electric Elevator Co., Ltd. (MESE) (former name: Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator Engineering Technology Co., Ltd.) was founded in August 2002. The company introduced the manufacture technology of permanent magnetic synchronized motor driven gearless wheel driving machine, the core part of elevator without machine rooms/with small machine room from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Through the construction of the engineering projects of Phase I and II of the factory, a production capacity of 7,000 sets annually was formed.

May 2006, aiming at the increasing demand of high-end users on high-speed elevators in China, Shanghai Mechanic and Mitsubishi Electric has fully utilized the advantages of Mitsubishi electric in high-end elevators to establish the production base for such elevators based in Shanghai so as to quickly occupy the domestic high-end elevators market, and make the part of business bigger and stronger. Therefore, the company formed the best combination of products comprising SMEC and MESE to exert the maximum effects of the double brands strategy. The company decided to invest more to MESE. The total investment was increased to USD90 million from the USD20 million before. A production base for high-end technology elevators was newly built in Xinzhuang Industrial Zone, Minhang District to cooperate with SMEC to realize the annual sales of 30,000 elevators, market occupation rate 20%, and the target of all first in profit rate and quality, etc, to lay a foundation for the long-term development of Shanghai Mechanical and Electric in keeping its leading position in the domestic elevator industry.
